Background: House Bill 115 would allow medical practitioners, health care institutions, and health care payers to refuse to provide services based on moral or religious objections.

Our position: The ACLU of Wyoming opposes House Bill 115. Patients' needs should take precedence over personal beliefs in health care.

Referred to as “conscience protections,” policies like this would provide protections for health workers who do not want to perform abortions, treat transgender patients based on their gender identity, or other services that go against their religious or moral beliefs.

Freedom of religion is one of our most fundamental rights as Americans, but that freedom does not give any of us the right to harm others. Medical standards, not religious or moral beliefs, should guide medical and health care services.
